Behind the Scenes at GRA

Several weeks ago we told you about our work with SRVSA in Somerset, New Jersey.  The project focused on taking a number sediment cores in order to reconstruct the environmental history of the area and assess the archaeological potential.  In addition to in field analysis, cores were brought back to the lab for more in depth studies.  The field analysis allows us a good overview and assures that the project can finish in a timely manner.  However, we bring every fourth core taken in the field back so that the can be analyzed in a more climate controlled environment with more time devoted to each individual core.  This ensures that we don’t miss the more subtle details that poor lighting, weather, or time may have covered in the field.  Here’s some photos of the first cores being split and photographed for analysis.
