We hope everyone was able to stay safe and warm during the storm! Here’s the reveal for this past Tuesday’s curious curio:
Almost all of you guessed an oil lamp wick holder – and you are correct! Oil lamps were of course the primary source of lighting in homes of the 19th Century, and the types of lamp we see at this time, with a central burner and glass chimney to protect the flame, date to the 18th Century. Not until the turn of the century did gas lighting give way to electricity in homes!
